Abstract

This study investigates the chemical composition profile, antioxidant evaluation, and neuroprotective effects of hexane leaf extracts of Spondiasmombin. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolics, and terpenoids, known for their antioxidant properties. The antioxidant capacity was assessed using multiple assays, including DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), with results indicating significant inhibition of free radicals and robust reducing power. The hexane extract demonstrated a maximum DPPH radical scavenging activity of 81.89% at a concentration of 250 µg/mL and a FRAP value ranging from 0.0749 to 0.0780 mg equivalents of FeSO₄/mg dry weight, suggesting a strong antioxidant potential. Furthermore, the extract exhibited a notable inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase (AChE), ranging from 18.39% at 20 mg/mL to 47.13% at 100 mg/mL, indicating its potential neuroprotective role. The findings suppogrt the traditional use of Spondiasmombin in herbal medicine and highlight its potential as a natural source of antioxidants and neuroprotective agents. Further exploration of its therapeutic applications is warranted to establish its efficacy in clinical settings.
