THE IMPACT OF MOBILE LEARNING DEVICE ON ACADEMIC ACHIVEMENT OF MATHEMATICS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION IN ONDO STATE
Abstract
In recent years, the adoption of mobile learning devices has gained momentum across educational
settings worldwide, offering unprecedented opportunities to transform traditional teaching and
learning practices. This study aims to explore the impact of mobile learning devices on the
academic achievement of mathematics students within tertiary institutions in Ondo State, Nigeria.
Given the growing prevalence of smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices, understanding
their potential to enhance mathematics education is crucial for improving educational outcomes in
the region.
Employing a mixed-methods research design, this study engaged both quantitative and qualitative
approaches to comprehensively examine the relationship between mobile learning device usage
and mathematics performance among tertiary students. Quantitative data were collected through
surveys administered to a diverse sample of students, assessing their frequency of mobile device
usage for educational purposes, perceived benefits, and academic performance in mathematics.
Additionally, qualitative insights were gathered through semi-structured interviews with
mathematics educators, probing their perspectives on the integration of mobile technology into
teaching practices and its impact on student learning outcomes.
The findings of this study reveal several significant correlations between mobile learning device
utilization and academic achievement in mathematics. Firstly, the majority of students reported
frequent use of mobile devices for accessing educational resources, engaging with mathematics-
related applications, and collaborating with peers on academic tasks. Such utilization was found
to positively influence students' attitudes towards mathematics, fostering greater interest,
motivation, and self-directed learning behaviors. Moreover, students highlighted the convenience
and flexibility offered by mobile devices, enabling anytime, anywhere access to learning materials
and personalized study experiences.
