Abstract

This study seeks to establish the effect of extract of selenium supplementation on bilirubin in acetaminophen induced toxicity in wistar rats. A total of twenty (20) Wistar rats were selected for this study, the experimental rats were randomly divided into five (5) groups, Group one (control group): received normal rat chow and water only. Group two (Acetaminophen only): received same as group one and 0.2mls of 7 grams of acetaminophen as group 1 and 0.2mls of 7g of acetaminophen dissolved in 150mls of water. Group 3 (Selenium only): received same thing as group 1 and 0.2mls of 7g of selenium dissolved in 150mls of water. Group 4 (Selenium and Acetaminophen): received same as group 1, 2 and 3. The dose regimens were administered once daily for the period of the study. The rats were monitored for clinical signs and death. All administrations were done orally using oropharyngeal cannula once per day for 21 days (3 weeks). At the end of the experimental period, the anesthesia was performed on all experimental animals. The anesthetized animals were bled by cardiac puncture. The blood samples were collected for the analysis of Total Bilirubin (TB), Conjugated Bilirubin (CB) & Unconjugated Bilirubin (UCB). The results reveals that the extract of selenium supplementation significantly (P
