Abstract

This study examines the role of local government in managing communal conflicts in Bauchi Local Government Area, with a focus on the mechanisms, challenges, and effectiveness of grassroots governance in conflict resolution. Communal conflicts in Nigeria, particularly in Bauchi State, have often been fueled by competition over resources, ethnic differences, political interests, and land disputes, which pose significant threats to peace, development, and social cohesion. As the tier of government closest to the people, the local government is strategically positioned to address these conflicts through mediation, peacebuilding initiatives, policy implementation, and collaboration with traditional and community leaders. The research seeks to highlight the extent to which Bauchi Local Government has engaged in conflict prevention, resolution, and management, while also identifying institutional weaknesses such as inadequate resources, political interference, and lack of community trust that hinder its effectiveness. By drawing on both primary and secondary data, the study underscores the importance of empowering local governments with autonomy, resources, and capacity-building to strengthen their conflict management roles. Ultimately, the work argues that a proactive and inclusive local government approach is essential for promoting sustainable peace, enhancing intergroup relations, and fostering development within Bauchi Local Government Area.
