Abstract

This study evaluates the levels of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, urine glucose, and leukocyte concentrations in apparently healthy undergraduate students at Edo State University Iyamho, with the aim of identifying potential early markers of metabolic conditions. A total of 100 students (70 females and 30 males, aged 15-24 years) were randomly selected for the study. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, and urinalysis were conducted, alongside blood collection for ALP determination. The study found no significant difference between males and females regarding age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumferences, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures. However, there was a significant difference in pulse pressure between genders. The ALP levels observed did not show significant variation across genders, but the values were slightly lower than the normal reference range for both groups. In urinalysis, 91 participants showed trace leukocytes, while all participants exhibited trace glucose levels, which may reflect dietary patterns.Correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between ALP and diastolic blood pressure in males. However, correlations with other anthropometric indices were not statistically significant. In conclusion, the study provides valuable data on ALP activity, urine glucose, and leukocyte levels among young adults, which can help in early detection of subclinical conditions, potentially aiding in preventive healthcare and promoting health awareness in academic settings. Further research with larger sample sizes and a bigger demographic coverage is recommended to further evaluate these findings.
