Abstract

This study investigates the compressive strength of concrete made with akpugo sand. akpugo sand was obtained by open excavation from akpugo sand deposit. The physical properties of the akpugo sand were investigated. 100% of akpugo sand was used for concrete production, concrete mix design was done and a mix ratio of 1: 5.7 was obtained at a water to-cement ratio (w/c) of 0.5. Slump test was done on the fresh concrete. A total of 12 concrete cubes measuring 150-mm x 150-mm x 150-mm were produced with a 42.5N/mm2 brand of BUA cement. The concrete cubes were cured by complete immersion in water and tested for compressive strength at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. The compressive strength of the concrete increased with curing age. Laboratory values of 8.5N/mm2, 9.3N/mm2, 20.8N/mm2 and 25.2N/mm2 were obtained at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days of curing respectively. No additive was used in the mix. Hence, akpugo sand is suitable as fine aggregate for concrete production.
