AN ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF AI TOOLS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MASS COMMUNICATION STUDENTS: A STUDY OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC BAUCHI
Abstract
Abstract
This study titled “An Assessment of the Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools on the Performance of Mass Communication Students: A Study of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi” investigates the influence of Artificial Intelligence applications on students’ academic performance. The study was anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Constructivist Learning Theory. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 160 Mass Communication students, out of which 147 were validly completed and analyzed, representing a 91.9% response rate. The data were analyzed using frequency distribution tables and simple percentage methods to address the research objectives.Findings revealed a high level of awareness and frequent use of AI tools among the respondents, with ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Canva identified as the most commonly used platforms. A total of 81% of students agreed that AI improved their writing clarity and structure, and 82% confirmed relying on AI for grammar correction. However, 56% admitted that the use of AI sometimes reduces deep thinking, suggesting a level of cognitive dependency, although 77% of respondents reported revising AI-generated content before submission, indicating sustained critical engagement. Furthermore, 76% of the respondents believed that their grades had improved through AI assistance, 88% stated that AI helps them complete assignments faster, and 78% noted that AI use increases academic confidence.Challenges such as poor internet connectivity (69.4%), over-reliance on AI tools (44.9%), and fear of plagiarism (38.8%) were identified as key constraints to effective AI integration. The study concludes that AI tools have a positive and transformative impact on students’ academic performance and writing proficiency when used ethically and in moderation. The study recommends structured AI literacy programs, enhanced digital infrastructure, and the formulation of institutional guidelines to ensure balanced and responsible use of AI tools among students of Mass Communication.
