Abstract

ABSTRACT This study reviews how new digital tools are changing everyday legal work in Nigeria and beyond, with a focus on artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud services, and simple automation. Using desk research, a survey of 120 lawyers, and interviews with 15 managing partners, it asks what gains and problems firms meet when they add these tools. Results show that AI research and drafting systems can cut reading and writing time by more than half, shifting hours to higher-value tasks. Cloud platforms let about three-quarters of firms store files online, lower IT costs, and work with clients from anywhere. Blockchain and smart contracts give tamper-proof records and self-running deals, speeding transactions while limiting fraud. Yet many small chambers still face high start-up fees, patchy internet, and limited tech skills, widening the digital gap inside the profession. Interviews confirm strong worry about job loss for junior staff, even as partners expect new income streams. Lawyers also fear hidden bias, data leaks, and hacking risks that come with AI engines and cloud vendors. Existing privacy and cybercrime laws cover some threats, but smart contracts and AI rulings still sit in a grey area that needs clearer rules. The study recommends short tech courses, shared cloud hubs, and tax breaks for smaller firms, plus strict bias checks for AI tools and legal guidance on smart contracts. With these steps, digital technology can raise speed, cut costs, and open wider doors to justice without harming public trust.
