Abstract

ABSTRACT Conflict resolution in regions with social, ethnic, or religious tensions is a pressing concern, and the involvement of clerics has become increasingly pivotal. This study explores the extent of clerical involvement, their approaches, and the challenges they face in conflict management and resolution within the Maiduguri Metropolis (MMC) of Borno State, Nigeria. The main objective is to assess the role of clerics in the management and resolution of the Boko Haram conflict in Maiduguri metropolis, Borno state, Nigeria. The study reviewed existing literature based on specific objectives and adopted the human need theory and the theory of 'relative deprivation' as its theoretical framework. It used a qualitative method and a case study approach, utilizing primary and secondary data to explain the role of clerics in conflict resolution. Data was collected using Key Informant Interviews (KII), which were conducted with twelve stakeholders from different professions. The collated data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings from the study revealed that clerical involvement in conflict management and resolution in MMC, Borno State, is characterized by deep and extensive engagement. Respondents emphasized that clerics are trusted peacemakers who often serve as mediators, educators, and moral guides within their communities. They actively participate in resolving disputes and conflicts, making a substantial impact on peace-building efforts in the region. The study also revealed that interfaith collaboration is a significant approach used by clerics in conflict management. Respondents noted that clerics from different religious backgrounds often collaborate to address conflicts, especially those involving multiple faiths. These interfaith initiatives were considered effective in promoting mutual understanding and harmony among diverse religious communities. The study also found that security risks are a persistent and significant challenge for clerics involved in conflict resolution. Respondents reported receiving threats from extremist groups who see clerics as threats to their ideologies. These security risks endanger the lives of clerics and limit their ability to engage effectively in conflict resolution. The study recommends that the government should implement community sensitization and awareness campaigns to educate local communities about the importance of clerical involvement in conflict resolution. It also suggests addressing misconceptions and skepticism by highlighting the positive impact of clerics' efforts in promoting peace and harmony.
