DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A MICROCONTROLLER-BASED 5KVA INVERTER USING SOLAR ENERGY
Abstract
This project was aimed at creating a stable power solution for the Computer Engineering Department. The project was done in response to the increasing need for a reliable power supply in educational settings particularly in the Computer Engineering Department, where consistent electricity is required for computational tasks, the project addressed the challenges posed by frequent power outages. The system incorporated a microcontroller programmed for monitoring output levels, two backup battery, and solar panels for energy harvesting. A solar-powered inverter system was designed and constructed to ensure both sustainability and cost-efficiency. The key components of the system included photovoltaic panels, a charge controller, a battery bank, a 5 kVA inverter circuit, and a microcontroller for monitoring system output. The photovoltaic panels converted sunlight into electrical energy, which was stored in the battery bank through the charge controller. The inverter circuit then converted the stored DC power into AC power suitable for the Department’s electrical loads. The microcontroller continuously monitored system outputs to prevent unintended power surges that could damage sensitive equipment. The project result upon completion, substantially produced stable power solution towards solving the problem it was designed to solve. This project also served as an educational resource for understanding the integration of electronics, microcontrollers, and power systems, while also providing a practical demonstration of renewable energy applications.
