EFFECT OF CONDEMNED OIL SIMULATION ON PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF COASTAL PLAIN SAND IN OBIO AKPA USING MAIZE (ZEA MAYS L.) AS A TEST CROP
Abstract
The physicochemical properties and growth response of Zea mays in condemned oil simulated soil was studied. The objectives were to determine the effect of the used engine oil on the physicochemical properties of the soils and growth response of Zea mayz. Condemned engine oil was obtained from mechanic work shop in Uyo mechanic village and maize seed (Zea mays L) (Var YZPB-SRW644-31) was also obtained. Experiment was conducted in Akwa Ibom State University Obio Akpa Campus greenhouse using pots and was laid out in a complete randomized design (CRD) with four level of condemned engine oil (0, 5, 7 and 10%) as treatment levels and replicated three times to give a total of twelve observations (experimental units). Plant height, number of leaves, stem girth and leaf area index were measured 2 and 4 weeks after planting. At the end of the experiment, soil samples were taken to the laboratory for analysis. Results of physiochemical properties of soils showed that soil texture was sandy in the control and samples treated with 5, 7 and 10 ml of the used engine oil. Soil pH was lower in treated soil than control. Soil organic carbon and total N were significantly higher (p
