Abstract

Aluminum chloride (AlCl₃) and D-galactose (D-gal) are known to induce neurodegeneration by promoting oxidative stress and astrocyte activation. Zingerone, a natural antioxidant, has demonstrated neuroprotective effects in various models of oxidative damage. This study investigates the effect of AlCl₃/D-gal-induced neurotoxicity on astrocytes and oxidative stress in the hippocampus of adult mice and explores the protective role of Zingerone. Twenty-eight (28) Adult mice were divided into four groups: Control, AlCl₃/D-galactose (AlCl₃/D-gal), AlCl₃/D-gal + Zingerone, and AlCl₃/D-gal + Donepezil. At the end of 8 weeks period, all the animals from each group were sacrificed a day after the end of the administration with anaesthesia by intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital followed by cervical dislocation. The hippocampus were removed, evaluated to ascertain the effects of the extracts administered. GFAP immunoreactivity was used to assess astrocyte activation, while superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were measured as markers of oxidative stress. The AlCl₃/D-gal group exhibited a significant increase (P
