THE ROLE OF HAEMOGLOBIN IN GLUCOSE METABOLISM IN TYPE II DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study evaluated the glucose, haemoglobin and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in type II diabetic patients. Glucose level, haemoglobin and glycated haemoglobin (Hb and HbA1c) of type II diabetic patents were analyzed to access the haemoglobin involvement in glucose metabolism in type II diabetic mellitus patients. The study design involved a cross section of 50 population grouped into 25 diabetic mellitus patients and 25 non diabetic patients. The blood samples (5ml) were collected from the patients and dispensed into Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid (EDTA) container for Hb and HbAIC measurement, and into a fluoride oxalate bottle for glucose estimation using cyanmethaemoglobin for haemoglobin concentration, immunofluorescent method for HbA1c and glucose oxidase for glucose estimation. Results shows that patients with type II diabetes, the mean haemoglobin values (12.68±1.17) decreases and the mean glycated haemoglobin values (9.28±2.76) increases significantly as the glucose increases (6.90±0.54) due to poor glycemic control. Also, from the results, patient with type II diabetics and its possible complications have low haemoglobin levels which significantly reveals a high rate of anemia among diabetic patients. The SPSS statistical analysis showed a statistically significant difference in the paremeters evaluated (glucose, Hb and HbA1c) for the two groups, where the P-value for glucose, haemoglobin and glycated haemoglobin were P
