Abstract

Abstract This study examines the impact of firm attributes on the financial reporting quality of listed insurance companies in Nigeria between 2018 and 2024. Financial reporting quality was measured using discretionary accruals, while firm attributes considered include profitability (ROA), firm size (natural log of total assets), leverage (debt-to-equity ratio), and board independence (proportion of non-executive directors). Data were sourced from the annual reports of 23 listed insurance firms and analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression techniques with SPSS. The results reveal that profitability and firm size significantly improve reporting quality, while leverage negatively influences it. Board independence shows a positive but insignificant effect. The study concludes that firm-specific characteristics are crucial in shaping transparent and reliable reporting. It recommends stronger corporate governance practices and prudent financial policies to enhance reporting quality in the Nigerian insurance sector.
