BACTERIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF SOME BOREHOLE WATER IN CALABAR SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE
Abstract
ABSTACT
This study assessed the bacteriological quality of water sample obtained from
Some boreholes in Calabar South Local Government Area of Coss River State. A
Total of 10 water samples were collected, labeled and transferred to the laboratory for analysis. Serial dilution of the samples was carried out, and the dilution factor
Of 104 was plated using sterilized Nutrient agar that was sterilized at 121oC for 15 minutes and left to cool for 40oC. the plates were labeled properly and incubated at 37oC for 24 hours in an incubator. The colonies developed were counted and recorded accordingly and their morphological appearance was noted. The results showed that the water sample from ATUI had the highest bacterial count of 4.2x105CFU/mL, while MZ2 had the lowest count of 3.0x104CFU/mL respectively> the following bacteria were isolated Klebsiella spp, Micrococcus spp, Salmonella spp, Shigella spp, Citrobacter spp, Vibrio spp, Campylobacter spp, and pseudomonas spp. The most prevalent bacteria were Salmonella spp, with a percentage occurrence of 25%, followed by Klebsiella spp, Micrococcus spp, shigella spp, Citrobacter spp with a percentage occurrence of 15%, followed by Vibrio spp with a percentage occurrence of 10% and the lowest prevalent bacteria were Campylobacter spp and pseudomonas spp with the percentage of 5% respectively.
