AWARENESS AND UTILIZATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN MKPAT ENIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This study examined the level of awareness and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning among secondary school teachers in Mkpat Enin Local Government area. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of 166 public secondary school’s teachers in the sixteen (16) public secondary schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. A sample size of 50 teachers was used for the study. A Simple random sampling technique was used to select 5 public secondary schools out of the 16 public secondary school in the study area. In each of the selected schools, an accidental sampling technique was used. The instrument used for data collection was Questionnaire on Awareness of Artificial Intelligence (QAAI) and the Questionnaire on Utilization of Artificial Intelligence (QUAI) with a reliability coefficient of .85 and .81. Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard, Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and one sample t-test statistics. The results indicated that the level of teachers’ awareness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is significantly high. The extent of utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is significantly high. Also, it was revealed that there is a significant relationship between secondary school teachers’ awareness and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI). Based on the findings, it is concluded that while secondary school teachers in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area are highly aware of AI, efforts are needed to enhance its practical application in teaching and learning. It is therefore recommended among others that workshops, seminars, continuous professional development programs, and awareness campaigns for teachers focused on the practical application of AI should be organized. AI concepts and applications should be systematically integrated into the school curriculum to promote both teacher and student proficiency in leveraging these technologies for educational purposes. This will underscore the importance of bridging the gap between AI awareness and practical application to improve educational outcomes.
