Abstract

Drug counterfeiting is a terrible menace to humanity because it can lead to organ damage, death, and extensive suffering. Every year, counterfeit and inferior medications claim millions of lives in Africa alone. Ensuring the validity and traceability of medications presents substantial issues for the pharmaceutical business, especially in environments with limited resources. By using a barcode-based method to identify fake and expired medications in the pharmaceutical supply chain, the study addresses this pressing problem. Literature review, system design, development, testing, and stakeholder involvement were all part of our methodology. Our framework uses barcode technology to guarantee pharmaceutical products' validity and traceability. Even with 1,000 concurrent user connections on a low-budget dedicated server, testing and validation results demonstrate good accuracy and efficiency in detecting counterfeit medications, with an impressive reaction time of 130ms. This invention has the potential to greatly lower the number of fake medications on the market worldwide, improving patient safety and public confidence in the pharmaceutical sector. Our methodology can also enable the establishment of more efficient drug supply chains, lower healthcare costs, and enhance drug supply chain management.
