A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF FRANTZ FANON’S IDEA OF DECOLONIZATION
Abstract
The project is on the topic: A Critical Examination of Frantz Fanon’s Idea of Decolonization. Franz Fanon is recognized as one of the most important and formative philosophers and theorists of the mid-20th century. His most famous work, The Wretched of the Earth (1961), was described by Stuart Hall as the "bible of decolonization": at that time the word decolonization meant the political independence of a colonial state, and Fanon was certainly centered on colonial Algeria. However, Fanon's work became a central text for the Black Panthers in the United States. It’s been over sixty years since the first wave of independence swept across the African continent, yet there has been no concrete development. Poverty and failed leadership as well as a society of retrogression are all Africa can present as the dividends of self-rule. This study therefore argues the position that the series of problems plaguing the African continent can only be eliminated through the Decolonization of the Political, Social, Mental, Educational, Economic, and Cultural structure of various African states, purging it of the vestiges of colonialism, and by extension imperialism. An adoption of Frantz Fanon’s notion of Decolonization, anchored primarily on violence is, however, necessary if Africa is to experience true independence from the shackle of domination and exploitation meted on them by their former colonial oppressors. This research thereby adopted a critical, historical, and analytical method in the analysis of the basic concepts. The essay recommends the need to promote a pluralistic view of African identity that embraces the continent’s diversity and encourages intercultural dialogue.
