ABSTRACT
This research work examined the effects of school-based violence on the academic performance of students of English language. A case study of some Selected Secondary School Students In Ondo West Local Government Area Of Ondo State.. The population of this study consisted 100 students from four secondary schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The sample for the study comprised of 100 students from four (4) secondary schools. The researcher used descriptive designed through self-developed questionnaires to obtain data for the study. Four research questions were raised for the study, and were analyzed. Findings revealed that School-based violence is a type of destruction that takes place in a teaching and learning environment. The violence ranger from psychological/mental to sexual to emotional. It is also seen as the use of physical force so as to abuse, ruin, damage or destroy a person or thing for selfish and inexcusable reasons. The school environment is an environmental meant mainly for the purpose of teaching and learning. It is an environment that is meant to keep a child in check. Safe and secure, but what do we make of such environment when it doesn't keep its promise of safety and security, rather it is the reason for a child's anxiety, frustration and scars. The study therefore recommended That Government, through their various agencies and school owners, should employ the services of more professional counsellors and psychologists. who could identify and extend their services to the homes where students encounter psychological violence, such as humiliation, isolation, blackmail and depression, to enable such families to be aware of the consequences of this aspect of community and violence on the academic achievements of their children, School management should be more strict and careful in their employment of teacher, as well as monitor the teacher and their interaction with students so as to ensure that no teacher maltreats any student in the school and Government, through their various agencies, should sensitize parent and student on the danger of community violence and how it can affect their academic achievements in school, through the establishment of Community Violence Centre.
