THE LUNAMERIN, TANGERETEIN, SILYMARIN, DAIDZEIN, ISORHAMNETIN CONTENT OF THE ESSENTIAL OILS OF HYPTIS VERTICILLATA
Abstract
This study investigates the essential oil composition of Hyptis verticillata, focusing on the presence and health benefits of five key bioactive compounds: lunamerin, tangeretin, silymarin, daidzein, and isorhamnetin. The essential oil was extracted using hydro-distillation and analyzed through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine the phytochemical composition. The results indicate a significant presence of these compounds, each offering therapeutic potential in various health applications, including antioxidant activity, anti- inflammatory properties, anticancer effects, and liver protection. Lunamerin demonstrated strong
antioxidant properties, making it a candidate for use in combating oxidative stress-related
conditions. Tangeretin showed promise in anti-inflammatory and anticancer therapies, while
silymarin was highlighted for its hepatoprotective abilities. Additionally, daidzein revealed potential in hormonal regulation, particularly for women’s health, and isorhamnetin contributed to the anti-inflammatory profile of the oil. These findings align with the traditional use of Hyptis
verticillata in herbal medicine, reinforcing its potential as a natural therapeutic agent. However, the study faced limitations such as small sample size and a focus on select phytochemicals. Future research should include broader phytochemical profiling and clinical trials to validate the therapeutic applications identified in this study. Despite these limitations, the results provide a solid foundation for the development of nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and herbal supplements based on Hyptis verticillata essential oils.
