DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A WEB-BASED WASTE MANAGEMENT AND REPORTING SYSTEM (ENUGU STATE AS CASE STUDY)
Abstract
The Waste Management System addresses inefficiencies in waste reporting and scheduling in Enugu State, Nigeria, a persistent issue for the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA). Challenges include delayed collections and poor resource allocation due to a lack of real-time data. This final year project at Renaissance University aimed to develop a web-based solution to enhance waste management efficiency, enabling real-time reporting, scheduling, and analytics for Residents, Officials, and Admins, while promoting sustainability. The project employed the Structured Systems Analysis and Design Method (SSADM) for system analysis, design, and implementation. A three-layer architecture was used, featuring a React-based single-page application (SPA), Supabase APIs with PostgreSQL for data management, and Deno for backend processing. Key modules—Authentication, Report Management, Schedule Management, Notifications, and Analytics—were developed using Vite, Tailwind CSS, and Supabase Studio, with a parallel changeover strategy planned for deployment. Testing confirmed a response time of less than 200 milliseconds and 99.9% uptime. The system successfully handled report submissions with image uploads, delivered real-time notifications, and secured data with Row Level Security (RLS) and JSON Web Tokens (JWT). The parallel changeover plan ensured compatibility with ESWAMA workflows, validating the system’s readiness. This project delivers an effective waste management solution for ESWAMA, demonstrating technology’s potential to improve environmental services. Recommendations include enhancing rural internet and exploring AI integration. This project offers a scalable model for future enhancements.
