Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was designed to examine the antilucerogenic effects of ethanolic extracts of cabbage on HCl- ethanol ulcer models in rats. Oral administration of different concentrations of the extracts at 50mg/kg,100mg/kg and 200mg/kg as well as the standard drug cimetidine 50mg/kg were given to each rat. Each dose of cabbage extract and cimetidine were given as a single oral dose for 14 consecutive days before induction of ulcer by HCl- ethanol (2ml/kgbw) . One hour later after the HCl- ethanol treatment, the rats were sacrificed and the stomach was obtained for ulcer area determination and histopathological examination. Ulcer area, and histopathological studies were assessed. The results of the study revealed that there was a decrease in the ulcer area among the treated groups i.e., 50mg/kg (587.27ⓜ±7.81) 100mg/kg (459.72ⓜ±13.54) 200mg/kg (317.88ⓜ±8.15) and in standard drug (265.41ⓜ±13.04) when compared to the control (892.01ⓜ±38.08) . Pre- treatment with various concentrations of the extracts of cabbage showed highly - significant activity against gastric ulcers 50mg/kg (34.16%) 100mg/kg (48.46%) 200mg/kg (64.36%) and in standard drug (70.25%) . The extracts of cabbage clearly show a protective effect against gastric ulcers in HCl- ethanol ulcer models in rats. The results in present study seems to provide support for the use of cabbage as an antilucer drug in folk medicine.
