Abstract

This study explores the impact of advertising on the sustainability of broadcast media organizations, with a specific focus on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS). Advertising is the primary revenue source for most media outlets, allowing them to finance operations, produce content, and maintain relevance in a competitive media landscape. The study examines the extent to which advertising contributes to BCOS's financial health, its role in content creation, and the challenges BCOS faces in generating and sustaining advertising revenue. The research adopts a mixed-method approach, utilizing interviews with BCOS management and advertising personnel, surveys of advertisers, and analysis of BCOS's financial records. The study also considers external factors influencing advertising revenue, such as competition from digital media platforms and changes in audience behavior. Findings indicate that advertising is crucial to BCOS's sustainability, but the organization faces significant challenges, including market competition, economic fluctuations, and shifts in media consumption patterns. The study provides insights into how BCOS can enhance its advertising strategies to ensure long term sustainability, suggesting that a focus on innovative advertising techniques, cross-platform promotions, and stronger relationships with advertisers could bolster revenue streams. These recommendations are aimed at not only improving BCOS's financial stability but also offering broader lessons for other broadcast media organizations navigating similar challenges in the evolving media landscape. Ultimately, the study highlights the indispensable role of advertising in ensuring the longevity and growth of broadcast media organizations like BCOS.
