FACTORS AFFECTING THE PERFORMANCE OF YORUBA STUDENTS IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the factors affecting the performance of Yoruba students in
junior secondary schools. Data for the study were gathered through the use of a structured questionnaire
designed by the researcher for that purpose. Purposive random sampling technique was used to select
one hundred (100) students from three (3) schools in some selected secondary schools in Ondo West
Local Government Area. All the questionnaires distributed were retrieved. The questionnaire was
analyzed using frequency count and means score. At the end of the analysis, the finds out that both
“mother tongue only” and “mother tongue as supplementary medium” of instructions were effective
media of instruction for teaching and learning. However, the use of mother tongue as supplementary
medium of instruction improved the performance of students in Yoruba to a large extent and thus was
adjudge the best. It was therefore recommended that contents, concepts and contexts in the indigenous
language should be treated with importance by teachers during instructional teaching approaches. Also,
teachers are encouraged to learn and facilitate their teaching in Yoruba language
