Abstract

Delayed Initiation of Breastfeeding (DIBF) refers to starting breastfeeding more than 1 hour after birth—a practice associated with higher neonatal morbidity and mortality because it reduces the infant’s access to protective colostrum and crucial early nutrition. Supported by WHO/UNICEF guidelines on early initiation as a key newborn care practice. In northern Nigeria (including Bauchi), studies show that delayed initiation is relatively common compared with recommended levels.
