Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of combined ethanol extract of Spondias Mombin, Gongronema Latifolium, & Vernonia Amygdalina on antioxidant status of wistar rats induced with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Twenty-eight (28) animals weighing between 200 and 300g were used for this study and divided into four groups of seven animals each. Group one acted as normal control and received 0.4ml distilled water, whereas groups two-four were induced BPH with subcutaneous injection of 3mg/kg body weight testosterone for two weeks. Following BPH induction, group two served as BPH control and were left untreated, while groups three and four were respectively treated with 150mg/kg body weight combined extract and 5mg/70kg body weight finasteride for twenty-eight days. After the experimental period, the rats were sacrificed and blood samples collected for biochemical assays. The results obtained showed that BPH induction increased PSA and 5-α reductase activity compared with control, treatment with combined extract significantly (p < 0.05) reduced PSA levels and 5-α reductase activity compared with BPH group. Also, BPH induction significantly (p < 0.05) decreased serum CAT, SOD and GSH activity in BPH induced group compared with normal control group. Treatment with combined extract increase CAT, SOD and GSH activity significantly (p < 0.05) compared with BPH group. Based on the result, it can be suggested that the Ethanol extract derived from the combination of Spondias mombin, Gongronema latifolium, and Vernonia amygdalina exhibits significant potential as an alternative treatment for BPH with antioxidant properties.
