Abstract

Rapid urbanization has become one of the most significant challenges affecting cities in developing countries, and Maiduguri is no exception. This study examines the trend, causes, and effects of rapid urbanization in the Maiduguri urban environment. Using a combination of field surveys, satellite imagery, and questionnaire responses, the research analyzes population growth patterns, land-use changes, and socio-environmental impacts over recent decades. Findings reveal that increasing rural-urban migration, security-induced displacement, economic opportunities, and government infrastructural development are the major drivers of Maiduguri’s accelerating urban expansion. The study further identifies key effects of this trend, including pressure on housing, traffic congestion, inadequate waste management, encroachment on agricultural land, and increased vulnerability to flooding due to poor planning. The research concludes that without proper urban planning, sustainable land-use policies, and improved infrastructural provision, Maiduguri’s rapid urbanization will continue to pose significant environmental and socio economic challenges. Recommendations are provided to guide policymakers, planners, and stakeholders toward creating a more sustainable and resilient urban environment.
