ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF POST HARVEST LOSSES OF TOMATO IN KASUWAN – GWARI BYE PASS JIMETA YOLA, ADAMAWA STATE
Abstract
The study analyzed the economic impact of post-harvest losses of tomatoes in Kasuwan Gwari Bye-Pass, Jimeta Yola, Adamawa State. The objectives were to identify the causes of post-harvest losses, estimate the quantity and percentage of tomatoes lost, determine the economic implications on farmers and traders, and assess strategies for minimizing such losses. A descriptive research design with a mixed-method approach was used. Data were collected through structured questionnaires using a multistage sampling technique and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as means and percentages.
Findings showed that major causes of tomato post-harvest losses include pest and disease infestation, poor ventilation, improper handling, and inadequate storage facilities. Approximately 25% of tomatoes were lost due to poor packaging, 5% during harvesting, and about 20% due to poor storage. The economic implications revealed loss of business opportunities, reduced export potential, and increased transportation costs affecting farmers and traders.
The study concludes that tomato post-harvest losses are a major challenge in the study area with significant economic consequences. It recommends improved handling, packaging, storage technologies, and awareness creation on best post-harvest practices to reduce losses and improve profitability.
