Abstract

ABSTRACT This study assessed climate variability impacts in Bauchi LGA, Nigeria (1994-2024) through analysis of meteorological data and satellite imagery. The research revealed a climate defined by high variability rather than consistent trends, with rainfall showing significant irregularity (62.75% coefficient of variation) and a statistically insignificant upward trend. Temperature patterns indicated general warming, particularly maximum temperatures that peaked at 35.45°C during 2004-2006. Critical findings show intensifying extreme weather events, with droughts recurring every 3-4 years and heatwaves increasing in both frequency (from 2 to 7 events) and duration (from 4 to 7 days). Seasonal rainfall shifts have compressed the effective growing season, while land use changes demonstrate strong climate feedbacks. Vegetation loss correlated negatively with rainfall (r=-0.56), and expansion of bare land and built-up areas positively correlated with maximum temperatures (r=0.68 and r=0.47 respectively), confirming urbanization and land degradation exacerbate local warming. These quantitative findings aligned with community reports of disrupted farming cycles and increased crop failure. The study concludes that Bauchi LGA faces compounded climate risks requiring integrated adaptation strategies including climate-smart agriculture, improved water management, sustainable urban planning, and enhanced early warning systems to build socio-ecological resilience.
