Abstract

The study examined visual instructional materials on students’ academic performance in Basic Science and Technology in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design for the study was quasi-experimental design. The population of this study comprised all the 1645 Junior Secondary one (JS1) Basic Science and Technology students in the eleven (11) public secondary schools in the study area. In each of the selected schools, one SS1 intact class was used to draw sample for the study. A sample size of 100 students was selected for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the two schools used in the study. The instrument entitled “Basic Science and Technology Performance Test on Visual Instructional Material (BSTPTVIM)” was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by two Basic Science and Technology lecturers and an expert in Measurement and Evaluation in the Faculty of Education. A reliability coefficient of 0.83 was obtained for the instrument using Kuder Richardson 20 formula. Mean and standard were used for answering the research questions while independent t-test was used for testing the hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The findings of the study showed that there is significant difference in the mean performance scores of Basic Science and Technology students taught the concept of food, nutrition and health using video and chart instructional materials. The findings of the study also showed that there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores of male and female Basic Science and Technology students taught the concept of food, nutrition and health using video and chart instructional materials. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that video instructional materials enhance students’ academic performance in Basic Science and Technology more than charts instructional materials in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. It was recommended among others that, the Ministry of Education should organize seminars, workshops, and conferences to equip Basic Science teachers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for effectively using video instructional materials in teaching and learning.
