DETERMINANTS OF STUDENTS’ SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF GODFREY OKOYE UNIVERSITY, ENUGU, ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Sexual behaviour among students in Nigerian tertiary institutions has become an increasingly important issue due to its wide-ranging impact on health, academic success, personal development, and broader societal stability. The study investigated the determinants influencing sexual behaviour among undergraduate students at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Nigeria. The researcher made use of 4 research questions. The study utilized 2 hypotheses and used descriptive statistics (frequencies, %ages), chi-square tests and Pearson correlation to identify and assess the significant differences and relationships between the variables. A structured questionnaire containing two sections (A and B) was formed and administered through Google Forms. Drawing from a sample of 364 students, the research adopted a cross-sectional survey design to inspect the impact of peer influence, university policies, cultural norms, and access to sexual education on students’ sexual decisions. The study proved that there is a significant difference between age, gender and risky sexual behaviours. Data analysis was conducted using quantitative techniques aimed at addressing the research problem. Results indicated that a significant number of students engaged in sexual relationships while at university, with key motivations including peer pressure, emotional connection, and curiosity. Despite broad acknowledgement of contraceptives and its importance, access remained inconsistent. The study concluded that sexual behaviour among undergraduates is the product of intersecting personal, social, and structural influences, calling for improved sexual health education, student-centered health services, mental health integration, and culturally sensitive policy reforms. Recommendations are offered to guide educational stakeholders, policymakers, and health practitioners in addressing the gaps identified and fostering healthier sexual practices in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
