AN EVALUATION OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF POLITICAL LEADERSHIP IN CORPORATE GOVERNANCE OF GOVERNMENTAL INSTITUTIONS: CASE OF OYO STATE

This study evalates the contribution of political leadership in corporate governance of governmental institutions. Oyo state is the understudied area. Political leadership is an important variable in actualizing corporate governance especially in governmental institutions. However, Political Leadership in government and governance regarding application of business policies as deployed in governmental institutions has been known to produce negative outcomes in Nigeria. It is this thinking that instigated this research to be carried out. Hence, the aim of the study “is to examine the contribution of political leadership in Corportae Governance of Governmental Institutions and question. One of the Objective is: To examine the contribution of political leadership in the corporate governance of governmental institutions in Oyo state. One of the Research Question is: What policy measures are needed to enhance the positive outcomes of the relationship between Political Leaders and corprate governance in governmental institutions in Oyo state?. The study tested two hypotheses. The study is significant because it provides strategies for Political Leadership to revamp business policies deployed in Governmental Institutions to influence Corporate Governance to be applicable. The study utilize leadership theory as its theoretical framework. The study is based on the quantitative methodology. It utilized the questionnaire method to collect its data. The respondent for this study were sampled from Oyo West Local Government Area of Oyo. Descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized to analyze the data. The study found that regular governmental meetings enhance corporate governance in the country. The study also found that political leadership significantly sets the tone for corporate governance to succeed in Nigeria. Hence Political Leadership significantly impacts on corporate governance. The study recommends among other things that greater integration of politcal consideration into corportae governance of governmental institutions is imperative. Also, it was recommended that political leadership must of neccessity support the training and development of public administrators in corporate governance priciples, practices and their application.
