Abstract

ABSTRACT The design and construction of human speed detector for a single sensor system has been constructed and the aim of the project was actualized. The project utilizes a single motion detection sensor integrated with a microcontroller to capture temporal variations in human movement across a predefined path. The system calculates speed by measuring the time interval between initial detection and completion of motion across the sensor’s field of view, applying distance–time computational models. This single-sensor approach reduces hardware requirements, enhances portability, and ensures cost-effectiveness without compromising detection accuracy. Experimental tests conducted under controlled conditions demonstrated reliable detection of human movement with minimal latency and an acceptable error margin when compared with standard speed measurement methods. The system is therefore a promising solution for low-cost human speed monitoring applications, particularly in environments such as educational laboratories, training facilities, and public safety operations. Future improvements may integrate wireless communication, machine learning algorithms for adaptive detection, and extended range sensors to further enhance system performance. The device is essential in various applications, including sports performance analysis, security monitoring, accident prevention, and traffic regulation.
