EFFECT OF POLYHERBAL COMBINATION OF SPONDIAS MOMBIN, VERNONIA AMYGDALINA, AND GONGRONEMA LATIFOLIUM LEAVE EXTRACT ON SERUM LIPID PROFILE AND TESTOSTERONE PROPIONATE INDUCED BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA IN WISTER RATS.
Abstract
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common urological condition characterized by prostate gland enlargement, often associated with metabolic disturbances such as dyslipidemia. This study evaluated the effect of a polyherbal combination of Spondias mombin, Vernonia amygdalina, and Gongronema latifolium leave extracts on serum lipid profile and testosterone propionate-induced BPH in Wistar rats. Forty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups, including a control group, BPH group, and groups treated with the polyherbal combination. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, 5-α reductase activity, and serum lipid profiles were measured. The results showed significant (p < 0.05) increases in PSA levels and 5-α reductase activity in the BPH group, which were significantly reduced by the polyherbal treatment. Furthermore, the polyherbal combination significantly improved total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), triglyceride (TG), and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c) levels in the BPH group. These findings suggest that the polyherbal combination exhibits anti-BPH and lipid-lowering effects, making it a potential alternative or adjunct therapy for BPH and related metabolic disorders.
