Abstract

Palm oil processing generally generates lots of wastewater (palm oil mill efuent), this is usually discharged into the environment in the untreated form and subsequently causes several environmental issues. This study was conducted to isolate and characterize fungi from palm oil contaminated soil. Six samples were collected from three study sites; (Ikot Okpora, Ayaba and Orira) of Umon village in Biase L.G.A in Cross River State. The samples were analyzed using standard microbiological techniques. The fungal count obtained ranges from 1.2x103 CFU/g to 5.6x106 CFU/g. The suspected fungal species isolated include Trichoderma viride, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus sydowii, Penicillin simplissimum, Aspergillus terreus. The study concluded that the studied soil sample would be useful for environmental growth.
