Abstract

ABSTRACT The Study Examine the Impact of Flooding Disaster on Livelihood Among Residents in Maiduguri Metropolis. Flood disasters are among the most significant environmental challenges affecting livelihoods in Maiduguri Metropolis, a city located in northeastern Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to examine the impact of flooding on agricultural activities of residents in MMC, Identify the impact of flooding in Housing among residents in MMC, Identify the impact of flooding in small business among residents of MMC and to Provide recommendations for mitigating future flooding risks. The study also explores the multifaceted impacts of flooding on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of residents' lives. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys, interviews, and secondary sources to assess how recurrent floods disrupt livelihoods. The findings reveal that flooding has led to significant displacement, loss of assets, reduced agricultural productivity, and a decline in small-scale businesses, exacerbating poverty levels among affected households. Moreover, the destruction of infrastructure, including roads, schools, and healthcare facilities, has deepened social vulnerability and hindered access to essential services. The study also highlights coping mechanisms employed by residents, such as reliance on informal social networks and short-term relief measures, which often prove inadequate. It concludes with recommendations for sustainable flood risk management strategies, including improved urban planning, investment in flood-resilient infrastructure, and enhanced community awareness programs. These measures are critical for mitigating the adverse effects of flooding and ensuring the resilience of livelihoods in Maiduguri Metropolis.
