THE EFFECT OF 3E AND SCAFFOLDING TEACHING STRATEGIES ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BASIC SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN ITU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
The study investigated the effect of 3E and scaffolding teaching strategies on students’ academic performance in Basic Science and technology in Itu Local Government Area. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a pretest posttest quasi-experimental research design. The population of the study consisted of 5,205 Junior Secondary Two (JSS2) students in Itu Local Government Area. The sample size of one hundred and ten (110) students in their intact classes was drawn from two (2) randomly selected co-educational public schools in the study area. The instrument for the study was Basic Science and Technology Performance Test (BSTPT). The instrument was validated by two lecturers in Science Education Department, one from Integrated Science Education and an expert in Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was done using Kuder Richardson Reliability formula 20 (K-R20) to ascertain the internal consistency and was found to be 0.83. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and independent T-test. The finding revealed that there is significant difference in the performance mean scores of Basic Science and Technology students taught the concept of energy using 3E and scaffolding teaching strategies in favour of those taught using 3E teaching strategy. The finding also revealed that there is a significant difference in the performance mean scores between male and female Basic Science and Technology students taught the concept of energy using 3E teaching in favour of female students. The finding further revealed that there was no significant difference in the performance mean scores between male and female Basic Science and Technology students when taught the concept of energy using scaffolding teaching strategy. It was there recommended among others that, Government should organize seminars, workshop and conferences frequently so that teachers can update their knowledge of use of student-centered learning strategies such as 3E teacher strategy.
