MOLECULAR DETECTION OF VIRUS INFECTING JATROPHA IN CALABAR
Abstract
Abstract
Jatropha, (genus Jatropha), member of the spurge family Euphorbiaceae. This plant is a
highly valued crop in Calabar, Nigeria, and globally, due to its potential as a sustainable
source of biofuel, medicine, and food. Jatropha seen within Calabar revealed evidence of
virus infection resulting severe leaf malformation. The study was aimed at detecting virus
infecting this plant in Calabar. The infected leaf samples were tested against Jatropha mosaic
nigerian virus (JMNV) specific primers using RT-PCR. The result showed that the sample
tested positive to the Jatropha mosaic nigerian virus JMNV Primer confirming that the virus
under study is yam mosaic virus JMNV The sequence obtained when compared with other
virus sequences available in the NCBI GenBank using BLASTn revealed 90 % sequence
identity with Jatropha mosaic nigerian virus further confirming that the virus under study is
Jatropha mosaic nigerian virus. This is the first report of detection of virus infecting this
plant in Calabar.
