Abstract

This research explored the impact of technology on diplomacy in Nigeria between 2019 and 2023. The study assessed how digital tools such as social media platforms, video conferencing, email, and official websites have influenced Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements. It also examined the extent to which technology has improved diplomatic efficiency, the role of social media in foreign policy communication, the challenges of cybersecurity, and the barriers Nigeria faces in integrating technology into its diplomatic system. The study adopted a quantitative research method, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. A total of 400 valid responses were received and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that technology has significantly transformed Nigeria’s diplomatic practices, making communication more efficient and accessible. Social media platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook were highlighted as tools commonly used in diplomatic communication. However, the study also identified challenges such as cybersecurity risks, inadequate digital infrastructure, and limited technical capacity within diplomatic institutions. Based on the findings, the study concluded that while Nigeria has made commendable efforts in embracing digital diplomacy, there is a need for stronger investment in digital infrastructure, policy development, cybersecurity, and training. This study contributes to existing literature by providing insights into how a developing country like Nigeria can adapt and thrive in the evolving landscape of digital diplomacy.
