Abstract

This research explores the role of costumes and makeup in shaping gender representation in James Ene Henshaw's Medicine for Love and Remi Adetiba's King of Boys. Through a comparative analysis of both works, the study investigates how costumes and makeup function as visual tools that reflect, challenge, or reinforce gender norms within their respective cultural and narrative contexts. Medicine for Love, set in a traditional African context, utilises costumes and makeup to emphasise gender roles and expectations, while King of Boys, a contemporary political thriller, presents complex gender dynamics, using these visual elements to portray power, authority, and societal perception of masculinity and femininity. The research highlights the significance of costumes and makeup in shaping audience perception, revealing how these artistic choices contribute to the construction of gender identity and its representation in African drama and film. The work utilises qualitative research design as well as primary and secondary sources of data collection. This research endeavour is significant to both students and practicing Costumes and makeup designers as it saves as a practical companion in the profession. The work recommends amongst others that there should be further training and re-training of costumes and makeup designers for better performances in the profession.
