ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate on the effect of hands-on experiment and expository teaching approaches on students’ learning outcome in Physics in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The population of this study comprised of 2093 Senior Secondary One (SSI) Physics students in the sixteen (16) public secondary schools in the study area. The sample size of the study consisted of 96 SS1 students selected from two secondary schools in the study area. A simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the two (2) secondary schools out of the 16 public secondary schools in the study area. Physics Performance Test on Simple harmonic motion (PPTSHM) developed by the researcher. To ensure the validity of the instrument, the instrument was presented to a senior Physics lecturer in the Department of Physics Science, Akwa Ibom State University and an expert in Measurement and Evaluation in the Department of Science Education, Akwa Ibom State University. The instrument was subjected to trial testing to measure its internal consistency using 20 students from SSI in a school different from the area of the study. The scores obtained were analyzed using Kuder Richardson formula-20 (KR-20) and a reliability index obtained after the analysis of the scores was 0.83. Mean and standard deviation was used to answers the research questions while independent t - test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant difference in the learning outcome of Physics students taught the concept of simple harmonic motion using hands-on experiment and those taught using expository teaching approaches. There is no significant difference in the learning outcome of male and female Physics students taught the concept of simple harmonic motion using hands-on experiment teaching approach. Lastly, there is no significant difference in the learning outcome of male and female Physics students taught the concept of simple harmonic motion using expository approach. it was recommended among others that students should be actively engaging in hands-on experiments to enhance their understanding of Physics concepts through practical experience.
