Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of microfinance banks on the performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Bauchi State, Nigeria. The primary objective was to assess how microfinance loans, investments, and other contributions influence SME growth, sustainability, and profitability. The research employed a descriptive survey design, collecting data from 32 SME owners and managers through structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to evaluate the extent of microfinance impact and the relationships between financial support and business performance. The findings revealed that microfinance bank loans significantly enhance SME operations, enabling entrepreneurs to acquire materials, purchase equipment, and expand their businesses. Investment programs and advisory services from microfinance institutions were found to promote financial stability, managerial efficiency, and long-term sustainability. Additionally, the study highlighted that microfinance contributions positively affect Nigeria’s economic growth by fostering entrepreneurship, creating employment, and enhancing financial inclusion. Despite these benefits, challenges such as high interest rates, short repayment periods, limited capital, and bureaucratic procedures were identified as constraints to maximizing the potential of microfinance services. Based on the findings, the study concludes that microfinance banks are essential for SME development and economic growth in Nigeria. Recommendations include implementing flexible loan policies, diversifying financial products, integrating capacity-building programs, and strengthening government support and regulatory frameworks. This research contributes to understanding the critical role of microfinance institutions in empowering SMEs and promoting inclusive economic development in emerging economies like Nigeria.
