IMPACT OF ORGANIC AMENDMENTS ON WHITE YAM (DIOSCOREA ROTUNDATA) PERFORMANCE AND SOIL HEALTH
Abstract
Impact of Organic Amendments on White Yam (Dioscorea rotundata) Performance and Soil
Health," conducted in March 2025, aimed to evaluate the effects of cassava peel, pig manure, and
poultry manure on white yam growth and yield as well as soil fertility. The Ado-Ekiti Teaching
and Research Farm at the Federal Polytechnic served as the study's site. Four treatments were
replicated using a Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD): 10 t/ha of cassava peel, 10 t/ha
of pig manure, 10 t/ha of poultry manure, and a control (no amendment). In addition to recording
growth (vine length and leaf count) and yield parameters (tuber weight and number per plant), soil
samples were taken both before and after the experiment to evaluate changes in physical and
chemical characteristics. When compared to the control, the results showed that organic
amendments greatly enhanced the chemical characteristics of the soil, especially its organic matter,
