ROLE OF COMMUNITY POLICING IN ENHANCING SECURITY IN YELWA, NIGERIA.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the role of community policing in enhancing security in Yelwa, Nigeria, focusing on the collaborative dynamics between police personnel and community members. Through a descriptive research design, the study examines perceptions regarding collaboration levels, effectiveness in crime prevention, and the overall impact on community safety. Data were collected via questionnaires administered to a sample of police officers and residents, revealing significant gaps in interaction and trust, which hinder effective collaboration and community engagement. Findings indicate that while some residents recognize the potential benefits of community policing, many perceive the collaboration as ineffective, with a noticeable lack of impact on crime rates. A substantial portion of respondents reported infrequent interactions with police and expressed dissatisfaction with existing collaborative initiatives. The analysis highlights the necessity for improved communication strategies, targeted outreach, and community involvement in the design of crime prevention programs to foster a stronger partnership between law enforcement and residents. In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of building trust and enhancing engagement strategies in community policing efforts within Yelwa. Recommendations include structured community meetings, tailored crime prevention initiatives, and regular feedback mechanisms to assess collaboration effectiveness. Addressing these issues is crucial for establishing a more effective community policing framework that can significantly contribute to enhancing security and improving the overall quality of life for residents in Yelwa.
