Abstract

Abstract News commercialization has emerged as a dominant feature of contemporary broadcast journalism in Nigeria. While media organizations rely on revenue generation for survival, excessive commercialization may compromise journalistic ethics, objectivity, and public trust. This study investigates the effect of news commercialization on the Nigerian Television Authority Makurdi, with specific focus on audience perception in Gboko Metropolis. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from residents of Gboko and media practitioners. Findings reveal that commercialization influences news content selection, editorial independence, and credibility perception. The study concludes that while commercialization sustains media operations financially, unchecked practices can erode public confidence and undermine the social responsibility function of the media.
