Abstract

Agar Listeria according to Ottaviani and Agosti (ALOA) is the recommended medium used for the detection and enmmeration of Listeria monocytogenes in food according to the official international organization of stardardizatio (180) methods. On ALOA, Listeria spp. appear bluish-green colonies due to the production of β-D-Glucoside, a chromogenic substrate included in the formulation of the medium. A total of twenty (20) Talinum triangulare (waterleaf) was purchased from Retailers in Ikot Akpaden, from the examination, samples were enriched with Buffer Listeria enrichment broth (BLEB) and cultured into Ottaviani and Agosti Agar which contains the chromogenic compound 5-bromo-4-chloro-3: indolyl-beta-D-glycopyranoside, which is a substrate for the detection of β-Glucosidase. The Bacteria isolate from Talinum triangulare that were able to grow on ALOA forming bluish-green colonies were further subcultured on blood agar to test for hemolysis as well as Gram-stained. Grain positive isolates were subjected to VITEK 2 system analysis for identification and antimicrobial shows the islolates to be Enterococcus casseloflavus. The isolated organism is a normal flora of human and animals which is implicated in food poisoning and intoxication, and also implicated as urinary infection, surgical wound Infections etc. It is of great significance as if posed a multiple drug resistance threat. Emergence of resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents in this genera has become a significant public health threat as there are fewer, or even sometimes no effective antimicrobial agents available agents available for infection caused by this bacteria. These results signfically describe the agar as weak in selecting to the target organism. However, rather than selective growth of Listeria spp., E. casseliflavus was obtained.
