ABSTRACT
The doctrine of separation of power date back to 1748, when a French political thinker Baron de Montesquieu wrote a book titled “Espirit de lois” – meaning the spirit of laws. This means the division of government powers into three branches of legislature, executive and judiciary. The legislative arm is responsible for law making. The executive implement these laws and the judiciary interprets these laws. The paper critically examined separation of power among various organs of government and its impact on service delivery in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State. Survey research design was adopted to generate necessary data. The population of the study consists of all the staff organization under study. Sampled size of 180 respondents was used from the population of 190. Questionnaire was the main research instrument which was supplemented with interview. Primary and secondary sources constituted method of data collection. The hypotheses were tested with the aid of chi-square (2) statistics. The finding of the analysis showed that separation of power had impact on the national development, and it brings about a more balanced government in democratic settings. It was recommended that the legislators should make laws that are of more benefit to the masses.
