THE PHENOMENON OF CORONA DISCHARGE IN ELECTRICAL POWER TRANSMISSION
Abstract
Generation and transmission of power is often faced by power losses. These power losses are caused by different factors. One of the seemingly common factors responsible for this is the formation and effect of corona. The phenomenon of power loss due to corona effect on transmission line is of great concern to researchers within the power sector. The effect of Corona on high voltage transmission line is one of the cause of power loss and this is uneconomical and undesirable. The study of Corona and factors responsible for the loss is investigated through sample calculation based on Peek’s formula and Peterson, the distance between generating station and load center as well as the amount of power to be handled increase to study an Extra High Voltage (EHV) line of about 1200Kv are used but the problems posed in using such high voltage and difference that any other person with interest in corona loss and it advantage will find this research useful. This project will also include the factor affecting Corona loss, application of Corona and benefits of Corona, all these will be considered here. This project presents the relations between power loss due to Corona and conductor radius, corona and conductors’ spacing, corona and supply frequency, as well as other corona parameters using MATLAB program and suggests some possible steps taken to minimize the power loss phenomenon.
