Abstract

This study examined the role of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in supporting economic development projects in Nigeria from 2015 to 2020, with a focus on both achievements and challenges. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study relied on secondary data sourced from UNECA reports, Nigerian government publications, policy briefs, academic literature, and relevant statistical databases. The analysis revealed that UNECA’s contributions significantly aided Nigeria’s post-recession economic recovery, enhanced statistical data capacity, promoted regional trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and supported progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Additionally, notable advancements were recorded in infrastructure, particularly in the transportation and energy sectors. Despite these gains, the study identified several persistent challenges that hindered project success, including inefficient resource allocation, weak project planning and management, limited stakeholder engagement, infrastructure deficits, governance and accountability issues, security threats, and capacity constraints. To address these issues, the study recommended improved resource management, strengthened planning frameworks, broader stakeholder involvement, targeted infrastructure development, enhanced governance mechanisms, improved security, and investments in local capacity building. These strategies were crucial for optimizing future development initiatives and achieving sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
