Abstract

ABSTRACT Wound healing is an important physiological process to maintain the integrity of skin after trauma, either by accident or by intent procedure. Musa x paradisiaca has been shown to possess wound healing activity. Fresh unripe fruits of Musa x paradisiaca were identified and collected. They were authenticated for their botanical activity and then washed, peeled, dried, grounded and macerated in ethanol for 3 days. The ethanol extract was gotten after filtration and evaporation. The rabbits were given graded doses of ethanol extracts of the unripe fruit of the plantain as well as positive and negative control orally for a period of 21 days. Pharmacognostic evaluations such as organoleptic analysis, chemo microscopy, proximate analysis and phytochemical screening. Other analyses were also conducted such as chromatography. After phytochemical evaluation, it was seen that there was presence of carbohydrate, flavonoids, saponin, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and phenol. tannins were absent. The extracts were seen to decrease percentage wound area when compared with both the positive and negative control group used. Therefore, plantain favored wound healing, and this may be attributed to its phytoconstituents which possess antioxidant and antimicrobial properties on various wound healing biochemical parameters. Keywords: Musa x paradisiaca, Wound healing.
